HLTV Ranking System Explained

The HLTV CS2 team ranking has been the standard reference for competitive Counter-Strike standings since its introduction in 2015. Tournament organizers, broadcasters, analysts, and teams themselves use HLTV rankings as the primary basis for seeding and invitation decisions. Understanding how the system works helps fans and professionals alike make sense of the weekly updates and their implications.

How Rankings Are Updated

Rankings are updated every Monday based on a rolling three-month period. Results become less impactful over time through a decay mechanism, meaning the most recent weeks carry significantly more weight than events from two to three months prior. This design ensures the ranking reflects a team's current form rather than historical reputation alone.

LAN vs Online Results

LAN events — matches played in physical studio or arena environments — carry considerably more value than online matches under HLTV's system. This weighting reflects the view that LAN performance is a more reliable indicator of true competitive quality, eliminating variance from connection issues and providing a consistent playing environment for all participants.

Roster Change Resets

When a team makes significant roster changes, HLTV resets a portion of their ranking points proportional to the number of players changed. A team must maintain a core of at least three players from the lineup that earned the points in order to retain the full value. This rule prevents teams from benefiting from points accumulated by a completely different group of players, keeping the ranking tied to active, functioning rosters.

Maximum Points Cap

No team can accumulate more than 1,000 HLTV ranking points. This cap prevents a single dominant team from creating an insurmountable lead and ensures that the top of the table remains meaningfully competitive even when one squad is performing at an elite level. Currently, Vitality holds the maximum 1,000 points, making every result particularly significant for the teams chasing the second position and beyond.

Event Tier Weighting

Not all tournament wins are equal under HLTV's system. Valve Majors, IEM Grand Slams, and the highest-tier international events produce the most points, while regional or lower-tier events contribute smaller amounts. This tiered approach ensures that consistent performance at the world's best tournaments is appropriately rewarded in the overall standings.
